To host HKMP to friends on the internet, you need to either port forward your router, or use a VPN app like Hamachi. Most people find Hamachi easier to use, which will be covered below.
Using something other than Hamachi
If you personally dislike Hamachi and want to use something else, you can alternatively see:
- The ZeroTier guide, a program similar to Hamachi. It doesn’t limit members per network to 5, and requires only whoever is creating the network to have an account
- The Tailscale guide, similar to ZeroTier but potentially more user friendly and reliable to set up
- The port forwarding guide, for advanced users that want to mess with the router instead
Setting up Hamachi
- Download and install Hamachi on all computers that will host or join the server
- Click the power button to get started
- Log in or sign up to Hamachi when asked
- Once signed in, someone (preferably whoever hosts often) should create a new network. To do so, go to Network > Create a new network...
- Enter a network ID and password that other people will use to join it, and click Create
- Everyone else should join that network. To do so, go to Network > Join an existing network...
- Enter the network ID and password given by the person that created the network and click Join
- Once everyone joined the network, the person who will host the server can copy their IP by right-clicking the numbers next to the shutdown button in Hamachi, and clicking Copy IPv4 address. This address should be given to anyone who wants to join the game
