This article covers how to host HKMP to people on the internet using Tailscale. You can alternatively see other ways of hosting on the internet.
Setting up Tailscale
- Download Tailscale on all computers that will host or join the server
- Once Tailscale is installed, click the icon in the tray bar to sign in
- The person that hosts the server should go to the Tailscale panel and click Share this machine
- For every friend that will join the server, create a new link and send it to them
- Once everyone has used their invite link, go back to the Machines page and copy your IP. Send this to friends that want to join the server
Starting the server
To host, pause the game, insert your username and a valid port in the server details (use 26950 if unsure) and click “Start Hosting”. Some things to note:
- You don't have to type your own IP to join the server, the mod will automatically connect you to your own server using IP "127.0.0.1", which points to yourself. Don’t give this IP to other users, they should be using a different IP given by this guide in the other sections
- To change server settings such as whether PVP is enabled, learn more about chat commands
- If you're interested in leaving your server running while your game is closed, learn to use the standalone server instead of hosting inside the game
Joining the server
Anyone who wants to join you should pause the game, insert your Tailscale IP from the previous part of the tutorial and the port you chose, then click "Connect".
